Standards Based Learning and Grading; Habits of Learning
Grades are a method of communicating between teacher, student and parents. They are not "compensation" used to reward or punish students; they are simply used to inform student level of achievement in terms of content and curriculum learning goals/targets, as well as habits of learning. While students receive daily feedback through check-ins, quizzes, conversations with teachers etc. unit grades are distributed to parents and students at the conclusion of each unit. Units can range from three to five weeks, and unlike traditional marking period grading timelines, students receive both a unit and cumulative grade at its conclusion. For example, at the conclusion of Unit 3 in Algebra, a student will receive a Unit 3 summary report as well as a cumulative grade from the beginning of the year.
