This is a hardworking, dedicated group of student athletes; both the boys and girls team won the State Championships last season despite the limited snow.

Cafe For A Cause
Please join us the the annual "Cafe for a Cause" which will be held on December 11. We are hoping that the entire community joins to support this year's cause: Our Community Cares Camp. Since its beginning, almost $40,000 has been donated to several worthwhile charities.
Annual Toys for Kids Toy Drive
The CVU Freshman Class Council is having its annual Toys for Kids drive to help provide toys and gift cards for families during this Holiday season. CVU collected approximately 500 toys for young children last year. Let's collect even more this year! Toys for Kids is also looking for monetary donations to purchase gift cards for teens who are often overlooked. Checks are payable to Toys for Kids. Please consider donating! Sophomore Class Council News
Recently CVU’s Sophomore Class Council made an astounding 26 pies which they donated to the Salvation Army, The Ronald McDonald House, and The Hope Lodge. The students worked for hours, making the pies and having fun doing so.
Sophomore Class Council President Bailee Pudvar said, "It was very fun to make the pies but delivering them was even more rewarding. It’s fulfilling to know that you made a difference in someone's life."
The Sophomore Class Council would like to thank all the members who showed up to make this event happen and especially Bailee's mom, Kathie Pudvar, who cooked pies for hours after all the pies were prepared!
HOBY Ambassadors Chosen

CVU Wins National Recognition for Energy Efficiency
CVU has been named one of Vermont’s first ENERGY STAR® schools. This achievement places the school in the top 25% of energy efficient schools in the country and signifies that it meets stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for healthy ventilation, year-round comfort, and lighting quality.
CVU was recognized at an award ceremony on November 7th at Camel’s Hump Middle School in Richmond, along with 10 other Vermont schools that achieved ENERGY STAR designation. The ceremony also marked the launch of Project Green School, an initiative that aims to put all Vermont schools on the path toward ENERGY STAR designation by 2020.
“We are working hard to make CVU more sustainable, and a large part of this effort is emphasizing the importance of energy conservation. Students are leading this work with our Whole School Energy Challenge project, and this award reflects the commitment of everyone—students, faculty, staff, and administrators – working together to reduce our energy use,” said Jeff Evans, CVU Principal.
Among those in attendance at the award ceremony were Congressman Peter Welch, Vermont Secretary of Education Armando Vilaseca, and representatives of the EPA, the Vermont Superintendents Association’s School Energy Management Program (VSA-SEMP), and Efficiency Vermont. Three CVU students, members of CVU’s EnACT Leadership Team, spoke at the event: Cameron Harris (Shelburne), Cally Braun (Charlotte), and Miranda Selinger (Hinesburg). EnACT Adviser is Katie Antos-Ketcham. Sophomore EnACT member Carmen Fisher-Olvera (Williston) and facilities staff member Tom Mongeon attended the event as well.
“The 11 schools we are honoring today have done great work,” said Jim Merriam, Director of Efficiency Vermont. “But the steps they have taken are within reach of any school in our state. With focused effort and enhanced support through Project Green School, we are looking forward to helping every community in Vermont provide a healthier and more energy efficient environment for their students.”

Word! Working On Respecting Diversity Club
Six members of CVU’s W.O.R.D! (Working on Respecting Diversity) Club were invited to the Statehouse on November 7th to facilitate anti-bullying workshops at the Vermont Youth Congress. Ernie Greene, one of the nine students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, was the keynote speaker to the crowd of 400 Vermont students. Green, who in 1999 received the Congressional Gold Medal (the highest award bestowed by Congress on a civilian), urged the crowd not to be afraid to stand up for change in the face of social injustice. He urges students to “Awaken the leader within themselves." Vermont Education Secretary Armando Vilaseca added, "We are all aware of bullying and harassment; it's a huge issue in our schools and our society amongst adults. We have not done a very good job of it as adults." He continued to say that youth can work together "to change the game." Congratulations to Sammy Gilliam, Ming Fen Congdon, Shania Bunbury, Lena Ford, Cat Belanger, and Gabby Ribeiro for taking on this important work!

The 2014 Yearbook is still available for purchase. The price is $50 until November 25, 2013. At that time, the price will go up to $60. No extra yearbooks are being ordered this year. Spring Theatre Auditions
This year’s Spring Theatre Production will be Student Directed One-Acts. Four Comedy one-acts directed by four student directors. There will be a meeting for all those interested in auditioning on Wednesday December 11 from 3:15-4 p.m. in the theatre. Auditions will held on the following Wednesday December 18. All those interested in auditioning should be sure to attend the December 11 meeting.
| Winter Sports Tryouts Most winter sports tryouts begin Monday, November 25 (ice hockey started Nov. 18). Athletes need to have had a physical within the last two years to participate. CVU counselors will review with students/families how to interpret the PLAN results as well as introduce Naviance, an interactive and informative future planning program. We look forward to seeing you! Counselors are visiting MOMW/ENG10 classes to review PLAN scores.

Before we know it, counselors will be meeting with 9th graders to discuss academic plans for next year. One option that is open to all rising 10th graders is the Pre-Technical Education Program at Center for Technology, in Essex. Pre-tech is a one-year, six-period program for sophomores who prefer project-oriented learning experiences that emphasize applied academics. Students are involved in a wide variety of cutting-edge technical activities where they learn science, mathematics, social studies, and communication skills while building personal development assets. Many students find this program a refreshing alternative to conventional classroom instruction.
Entrance Prerequisites
Applicants must have a ninth grade transcript that shows an award of five full credits including:
• 1 math
• 1 English
• 1 Social Studies
• 1 Science
• 1 Elective
Curriculum Components
Students select one of two of four curricular areas to focus on throughout the year. All four curriculum tracks are representative of the programs the center offers. The four areas include:
• Information Technology & Digital Media
• Natural Resources and Engineering
• Building Technology and Automotive
• Health and Human Services (includes: Medical Related Fields, Professional Foods, Child Education and Cosmetology)

CVU juniors and seniors now have access to virtual seats in the VHS Consortium. This non-profit, global network includes over 500 high schools and enables students to consider 200 online courses. Now that CVU is a member school, students can pursue specific areas of interest with other students from around the globe.
We have 25 spaces available each semester to supplement our CVU course offerings. Sound interesting? Students can check out the catalog at www.govhs.org. Spring registration will begin in November; juniors and seniors are also encouraged to consider a January course. Call Jane Krasnow in the Direction Center for more information.
Dual Enrollment Opportunities
Attention Juniors and Seniors!
Don’t miss the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school! Juniors and Seniors can enroll in college courses (online or on campus) during the academic year or during the summer. Study in core areas such as Math, Science, English, Languages, and the Arts. The programs available:
Wednesdays, starting in January from 4-6 PM.
The class focuses on all the skills that are needed to be successful at college: study/test taking skills, organization, financial aid, and communication skills. Although this does not offer college credit, students who complete the course can earn ½ English credit and ½ elective credit at CVU. Dual Enrollment Opportunities
Attention Juniors and Seniors!
Don’t miss the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school! Juniors and Seniors can enroll in college courses (online or on campus) during the academic year or during the summer. Study in core areas such as Math, Science, English, Languages, and the Arts. The programs available:
- Dual Enrollment Program, which is through the State of Vermont and allows students to take 1 tuition- free college course each year (one during junior year and one during senior year):CCV, Champlain, UVM and Burlington College all have Dual enrollment programs.
- The Academically Talented program, through the University of Vermont, offers VT high school students to take courses at 50% reduced tuition until they graduate. Some restrictions apply, and you do need to be approved by your guidance counselor.
Wednesdays, starting in January from 4-6 PM.
The class focuses on all the skills that are needed to be successful at college: study/test taking skills, organization, financial aid, and communication skills. Although this does not offer college credit, students who complete the course can earn ½ English credit and ½ elective credit at CVU.
