CVU Power Reading
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY:
Referred students who score below the 39th percentile on the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) test are administered diagnostic reading assessments. The formal diagnostic assessment WRMT III Woodcock Reading Mastery Test III provides data on Word Identification, Word Attack, Word Comprehension, Passage Comprehension and Oral Fluency. Informal measures may also be administered to identify specific instructional needs. A personalized interview and assessment also identifies brain dominance and learning styles.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Power Reading is an academic course offered to students in grades 9 through 12 who are referred for intervention in skills and strategies in the following areas: comprehension, word study and fluency. Classes include an average of 1-5 students. Students in grades 10 through 12 are eligible for the program based on their 9th grade Reading Profile or an EST referral. Students receive scores in Jumprope and a Pass or Fail as a final score. A final passing score earns a student a .5 elective credit per semester.
The Power Reading curriculum focuses on helping students improve reading skills using Standards-Based Learning Targets to monitor progress. Skills addressed are the following:
