FBLA Fall Leadership Conference

Picture
By Jarrett Slote and Jack Zullo

On Friday, September 26, the CVU Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club, attended the Fall Leadership conference at the State House in Montpelier, Vermont. For many, this was their first FBLA experience, while for others this was a familiar trip.  FBLA students from 12 other Vermont schools also attended the conference, making it a well attended meeting.  The meeting kicked off with an introduction of our state officers, which includes CVU students Bailee Pudvar and Chris Mallow. During the opening session CVU’s own Colleen Wedge was recognized for her work as the 2013-14 Executive Director.

The keynote speaker was Vermont born, New York City director, Michael “Chase” Gosselin.Gosselin shared his life story detailing his rise as a 13 year-old director, to a successful New York City director, who currently is working with world renowned British producer Cameron Macintosh. Gosselin has directed and choreographed numerous productions during his career, which is an astounding feat considering he is only 20 years old. Gosselin’s message of perseverance seemed to resonate with many attendees as it exemplified a Vermont success story.

Following his speech, students were told to form inter school groups and come up with ideas to help raise money for FBLA’s flagship charity, March of Dimes. The group with the best ideas won March of Dimes t-shirts.  Two CVU students were in the in winning group:  Olivia Machanic and Lyndsey Clos.

Following the group brainstorming, FBLA members were split up into various workshops that focused on how to run for FBLA State Office, dressing for a job interview, and credit basics.  Each of these workshops were informative and helped students gain a better understanding of future endeavors.  We thoroughly enjoyed this first FBLA conference of the year, and would like to extend our thanks to Tamie-Jo Dickinson and Colleen Wedge for helping to make this possible.

Host Families Needed

CVU will be hosting our second group of Danish students from our sister school, Odherreds Efterskole, in Faarevejle, Denmark.  The 25 students and two teachers will arrive January 23rd and depart January 30th.  The students will attend classes with their host family's CVU student and be immersed into life as  an American teen.  The purpose of the program is to bring international awareness and cultural diversity to our CVU community, and to allow for cross cultural learning opportunities for our students and teachers.

The requirements for the host families are that they provide transportation to and from school, three daily meals, and that they help their guest student with cultural adjustments.  The adults in the household will need to go through the CSSU Volunteer Criminal Records Check if they have not done so previously.

Check out the OE website www.odsherredsefterskole.dk to learn more about our sister school in Denmark.  Just click on “Translate this page”.  If you are interested in hosting one of our Danish guest students, please contact Katherine Riley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, at [email protected] or by phone at 482-7151.

Key Clubbers have already begun working on volunteer service projects such as the Champlain Buddy Walk, the COTS Zumbathon, the Haunted Forest and organizing a Thanksgiving food drive for the community.  If you have ideas for a service project or need to recruit volunteers for a community event please send an e-mail to club advisor Amy Wardwell at [email protected]

Yearbook News

Last reminder to all seniors and parents:  Senior pictures are due by Friday, October 31.  Information was emailed home this summer, and all seniors received an information sheet at their first class meeting in September.  Seniors can stop by the yearbook office, Room 118, if they need a copy of this handout or click here.

All Students:  The next student picture/retake day will be on November 3.

Just a reminder to order your 2015 yearbook early through http://www.jostens.com/.  Extra copies available at the end of the school year will be sparse, so it is very important to place your order early.

The 2015 yearbook is being created as an after-school activity; it is no longer offered as a class.  The yearbook club would appreciate any photos of sports, extracurricular events, drama productions, or any CVU-related function that anyone would like to submit.  Photos can be sent to Jacob Safari, Yearbook Advisor, at [email protected].
